Helping Professions & Chronic Illness

Supporting the Supporter

Whether you are an educator, social worker, healthcare provider or member of another helping profession, you deserve space to process your own life and work. In caring for those that dedicate themselves to helping others, I prioritize creating a non-judgmental and empathetic space to help you navigate challenges while preserving your own well-being.

Areas of Focus:

  • Compassion Fatigue and Burnout: Addressing the emotional exhaustion and burnout often experienced by caregivers and helping professionals due to the demands of their roles.

  • Secondary Trauma: Acknowledging and assisting those who might experience secondary trauma from witnessing or working with individuals who have undergone traumatic experiences.

  • Self-Care and Boundaries: Fostering healthy boundaries, self-care practices, and resilience-building strategies tailored to the needs of caregivers and individuals in helping professions.

Caring for and Coping with Chronic Illness

Are you struggling to make sense of a diagnosis of chronic illness? Do you feel uncertain about how to cope with your illness or how it will impact your future? Living with and adjusting to a long-term health condition can feel like a lonely journey, but it doesn’t have to be. I know, I’ve walked this path myself. Collaboratively, we’ll identify your personal values and develop strategies to help you lead a fulfilling life, even in the face of challenges.

Specific Approaches May Include:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Promotes acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings as well as commitment to actions aligned with your values for living a meaningful life.

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: An evidence-based program that combines mindfulness meditation, body awareness, and yoga to enhance resilience and reduce stress-related symptoms.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Empowers individuals to identify and recognize the connection between our feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Skills and techniques are taught to change unhelpful patterns in thinking and responding.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Combines components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with mindfulness practices that help develop distress tolerance, acceptance of emotions and interpersonal skill building.
